“As a grassroots community member who found herself a Founder and Executive Director with minimal training or support, I can not emphasize enough how much I benefited from working with Nicolle.”
— Annita Lucchesi, Founder, ED, Sovereign Bodies Institute-
Who is Nicolle?
I’m a Diné (Navajo) Nurse-Midwife, maternal‑health strategist, and policy advocate who has spent the past 18 years building Native‑led systems of care. My work braids ancestral birthing wisdom with evidence‑based medicine to untangle the structural inequities our families face. As founder of Changing Woman Initiative—the first Native‑women‑led, culturally rooted maternal‑health nonprofit in the United States—I helped raise more than $2 million to protect reproductive sovereignty and restore birth as ceremony for Indigenous communities.
Today, I lead Transcending Strategies LLC, a Native‑women‑owned consulting firm that guides tribes, nonprofits, and health systems in designing community‑defined birth centers and governance models. From the Senate floor—where I serve as a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellow—to United Nations hearings on Indigenous midwifery, I translate frontline experience into policy that advances sovereignty, safety, and joy in childbirth.
