Indigenous Women’s Mental Health
Arthun provided background information and challenges experienced by Indigenous populations related to mental health care. The United States has 574 federally recognized AI/AN tribes, and two-thirds of Indigenous individuals do not live on reservations. She noted that half of the AI/AN population is women, and 26.6 percent of AI/AN people live in poverty, which is nearly twice the national average. Nearly one in five (19 percent) of people who identify as AI/AN reported having a mental illness in the past year (MHA, n.d.).
